What To Do in LA?

Hey guys... any advice on what to do in LA? Trying to plan where we're going to stay, and since the public transport system seems to be pretty horrible I'm trying to book somewhere close to whatever it is we're going to be doing.

So... what's good in LA? Hollywood etc? The beaches? Anyone?
